Digital Images can be gathered in a variety of ways. The displayed photos are two separate examples. The one above was a printed photograph that was then scanned into the computer with a digital scanner, saved in a file, and uploaded to be displayed. The below picture is one that was taken with a digital camera and then uploaded from the camera to the computer. Both processes of photo retrieval and display were very easily accomplished with similar procedures once they were loaded onto the computer.

I would use digital images within the classroom to enhance the Commercial Cooking Curriculum. Specifically in the realm of Food Art, Display, and Appreciation.  As the students are to analyze, discuss, and later prepare food displays in various forms, it would serve them to do some research on various food forms. I would assign students in pairs or groups, depending upon student numbers to create a simulation online catalogue of “Do’s & Don’ts of Food Displays & Presentations.”

To create this online catalogue students would need to gather images of food presentations. This would be achieved by scanning images from magazines, newspapers, and books. Additional images would be actual food or displays of food (i.e. wedding cake) with a digital camera. The catalogue would serve students as a reference piece for future display or presentation creations in regards to the direction they would like to go, and colour schemes.

This activity would benefit students taking this course as they would leave with a better understanding of the nature and importance of food display in addition to the preparation aspect. The picture collection assignment would allow students various visual examples. As the majority of students would be familiar with both methods of photo collection the task would be enjoyable and easily accomplished for students.
